2.5 Hour Wildlife and Bay Tour

The tour departs the Homer Harbor, making its first stop at Gull Island.  Gull Island is 3 miles from the Homer Harbor and accessible by boat only. As many as 20,000 seabirds build nests on the rock faces and cliffs on the Island. Most years, 8,000 to 10,000 Black-legged Kittiwakes dominate the rookery, building mud nests perched on ledges. 5,000 to 8,000 Common Murres nest amid the Kittiwakes. Other birds that may be seen in smaller numbers include Glaucous-winged Gulls, Pelagic Cormorants, Red-faced Cormorants, Tufted and Horned Puffins, Black Oystercatchers and Pigeon Guillemots. The effect stuns the senses, being surrounded by the cacophony of crying birds. The sky can fill when a thousand birds take wing at once.

The tour also visits a small bay near Gull Island.  This part of the tour visits an oyster farm, a Bald Eagle nesting site, and views the varied residences, which are reached only by boat and seaplane.  Wildlife that may be encountered in the bay include Sea Otters, River Otters, Harbor Seals, Belted Kingfishers, Barn and Cliff Swallows, and Harlequin Ducks.
